During gaseous decontamination or fumigation the room must hold a defined pressure with almost no leakage, and that job falls to the airtight (bioseal) door. Two sealing technologies dominate: the inflatable-seal door and the mechanical-compression door. They reach similar airtightness by very different means — and the right choice usually comes down to one question: do you have reliable compressed air?

Airtight doors maintain the containment boundary during decontamination and fumigation.

Why airtight doors matter

Containment rooms run at a controlled negative pressure and are periodically decontaminated with a gas such as vaporized hydrogen peroxide or formaldehyde. If the door leaks, the pressure cascade collapses and the decontaminant escapes. An airtight door therefore has to do two things well: hold structural pressure without deforming, and seal its perimeter tight enough that leakage stays within a validated limit.

Inflatable-seal airtight door

The inflatable-seal door carries a gasket in the door leaf that stays retracted while the door swings, then inflates against the frame once closed — forming a continuous, even airtight band. It gives an extremely tight seal (leak < 0.25% volume/hour at +500 Pa, structural resistance ≥ 2500 Pa) and seals or releases in about 5 seconds, with a service life beyond 10,000 cycles. The trade-off: it needs a reliable compressed-air supply (inflation pressure around 1.5 kg/cm²) and power.

Mechanical-compression airtight door

The mechanical-compression door seals by physically clamping the leaf against a high-density gasket — no compressed air involved. That makes it dependable exactly where air or power supply cannot be guaranteed, which is why it is favoured in high-level animal and microbiology containment. Independent pressure-decay testing has shown a minute leak rate of 0.024% (holding to −1095 Pa, decaying only to −974 Pa over 20 minutes) and structural resistance of −2500 Pa held for 10 minutes with no deformation.

Inflatable vs mechanical at a glance

Factor

Inflatable-seal

Mechanical-compression

Sealing method

Inflatable gasket (compressed air)

Mechanical clamping

Герметичность

< 0.25% vol/h @ +500 Pa

~0.024% (tested, pressure-decay)

Конструктивная прочность

≥ 2500 Па

−2500 Па, без деформации

Needs compressed air

Yes

No

Seal / release

~5 s, automatic

On close (manual or powered)

Best for

BSL-3/4 fumigation with air supply

Air/power-independent containment

How to choose

Choose inflatable-seal when a stable compressed-air supply is available and you want the tightest, fastest automatic seal — typical for BSL-3/4 rooms on a regular fumigation cycle.

Choose mechanical-compression when independence from air and power matters, or in facilities (animal containment, remote suites) where a supply interruption must never compromise the seal.

Don’t forget the ductwork

A room is only as airtight as its weakest boundary — and that includes the HVAC.
